I have heard the saying “lost people act like lost people” at least ten thousand times, and I agree with it whole heartedly. Christian people expect way too much out of non Christian people. I can picture someone frantically lost, it is getting dark and a storm is rolling in. Not just any storm but a vicious storm with blistering cold, feet of snow, tornadoes, lightening, the whole nine yards…and some. Granted you probably couldn’t have all of those in the same place at the same time, but this is my story. Ok, so back to the storm, so here is this person with a battery operated radio and nothing else. All they can do is hear about the storm, they see it coming, but there is no way they can ever out run it, it’s every where. They begin to panic, screaming, crying, knowing they face a painful future of certain death, and they are not even sure where they are or where they need to go for safety. Here is where our Christian enters. Said Christian rolls up in an all-terrain vehicle, with at least a month’s supply of good food inside, GPS navigation, heated seats, leather heated seats, Doppler radar, etc. He/she (we must be sensitive) is set; they know where the storm is and they have the location of The Shelter on their GPS. Looking away from their TV, Christian programming of course, they notice that there is someone standing at the side of the road. “Hey there is a storm coming you know, you shouldn’t be out here.” “No sh*%!” the person replies with tear stained face. The Christian is horrified, how could they say such words. Mustering up courage the Christian continues, “You shouldn’t talk like that the people at The Shelter don’t like words like that.” Our weary friend picks up the biggest rock he/she can find and hurls it at the Christian, while continuing with various expletives. The wind is beginning to pick up and…stop. Ok I think we went far enough for you to get the picture. The Christian in the story has two options; one, get offended and drive off or two, realize that there is a good chance that this person is just lost, hopeless and just needs a ride and some directions.

The story behind this story is something that every Christian has faced or will face. We need to remember that it is the kindness of God that led us to repentance (Rom 2:4) and it will most likely be the kindness of God through us that will lead someone else to repentance. I pray that God will give us enough kindness to overflow into those around us.
