Nick, are you kidding? Lots of people can tell you who JFK’s vice president was. There are lots of people who remember when JFK was assassinated. Lots of people point to the irony of the fact that both Lincoln and JFK, very famous presidents who were both assassinated while in office, were succeeded by a V.P. named Johnson. I could have told you off the top of my head the names of both Lincoln’s and JFK’s V.P.s; had to double check Washington’s, but all three of the presidents you mentioned were succeeded in the presidency by their V.P.s. Just the fact that McCain is in his seventies made his V.P. pick important. Also, in recent history, Bush 41 was Reagan’s V.P. and succeeded Reagan. Gore was Clinton’s V.P. and narrowly missed succeeding Clinton.
There was an interesting article on Fox News about the Palin/Biden debate and the role of the vice presidency: http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,433314,00.html
Just an interesting note about Frost’s poem “The Road Not Taken” – one of my teacher’s pointed out the irony of the fact that nearly everyone identifies with choosing the road less travelled.
